We started out in 1980 designing furniture and lighting by following trends within the market place. Over time we were approached to partner in specialized projects with unique targets, especially in bespoke applications worldwide. In 2010 I was asked to design lighting for a physicians family home in India. His scope included "a unique design, that stand out world wide, would not be similar to any other product or brand, finishes must be predominantly gold, black and silver, subtle shadows cast in the ambient light without the light bulb being visible. The pendants, chandeliers, table lamps and wall lights must have the same look and feel. A 20 year full warrantee, not a guarantee, with no conditions attached other than forced breakage and fire". A budget was set and I embarked on compiling information to complete a unique range of products designed for his project. The materials that I had previously used in my designs proved very difficult to finalize a bespoke set of products. I had recently designed product for the Taiwan Government using aluminum. The ability to laser cut aluminum had been successfully achieved in 2008 and I decided to use this process as my starting point. It was unique. The next problem was that my design was not conducive for a powder coated finish. The engineering tolerances were to tight and it was ruled out. My only option was to use an anodized finish. While anodizing in many ways produces a much better finish, it was expensive and very time consuming. After lengthy negotiations it was agreed to use this process. The end result was a huge success and remains such. Only six years left for the warrantee but no call outs yet. 

And so began Afrofurn. Since then we have developed and achieved cost effective processes that allow us to design and engineer some remarkable products at much more affordable prices. While we do powder coat, our preferred finish is anodizing. The combination of laser cutting and anodizing aluminium thereafter is not easy and can be very expensive. Our engineers have developed a unique way of effecting this with remarkably professional results and this has resulted in us being the only company world wide that currently produces these products. Yes, a South African world first.
